Overview

The Caño Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge is a wetland and wildlife protection area located in the northern region of Costa Rica, near its border with Nicaragua.

It is situated in the lower basin of the Frío River, 21 km southwest of Los Chiles and 36 km southeast of the Upala community.

This refuge preserves one of the country’s most important wetland ecosystems, designated as a RAMSAR site and internationally recognized for providing shelter to a large number of migratory species, endangered species, and commercially significant species. Nearly 400 bird species have been documented in the Caño Negro area, which also encompasses the Biological Corridor of the Frío River and the Wetlands of the Middle Queso River.
